Hudson Yard Facade Repair Plug

If there is one area where 3D printing still has a lot of ground to make up, it's color. Most engineering-grade materials are limited to white, black, and gray. However, technology such as HP's full-color MJF printing are opening the door to new possibilities for people who need color-matched parts that are also functional.

Full color 3D printing

30 Hudson Yard is a skyscraper located in NYC's newest neighborhood of the same name. When a client approached us about 3D printing 30 simple exterior caps to replace the OEM ones, we thought 'simple'. However, the parts needed to match the existing exterior color and could not be painted to do so. This greatly limited our material options. Luckily, our favorite material, PA12 nylon, offers full-color 3D printing. The parts were printed as close to the original color as possible and then vapor smoothed to make them weather-resistant.

Process: Full-color MJF, Vapor Smoothing
